Required Registered Nurse Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):

  1. Knowledge of nursing care principles, practices, and procedures
  2. Knowledge of safety principles and infection control in the patient care environment
  3. Ability to assess patients' needs and coordinate appropriate nursing care plan
  4. Ability to communicate orally
  5. Knowledge of rehabilitative nursing and pre/post-operative care

Education:

Degree or diploma from a professional nursing program approved by the legally-designated state accrediting agency at the time the program was completed by the applicant. Education equivalent to the type described above is acceptable. Professional registration (see registration section below) meets this requirement.

Professional Registration:

All applicants must have an active, current registration as a professional nurse in a state, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. Exceptions may be made for applicants who have graduated from an approved nursing educational program within the past 12 months, pending state registration as a professional nurse within 6 months of appointment.

For consideration at the GS-04 level:

Please have one or more of the following:

  • Completion of a program of less than 30 months' duration
  • Associate degree
  • 1 year of nursing experience as a military corpsman

For consideration at the GS-05 level:

Please have one or more of the following:

  • Completion of a program of less than 30 months' duration or associate degree and 1 year of professional nursing, or of at least GS-4 level practical nurse or nursing assistant experience under the supervision of a professional nurse
  • Four academic years above high school
  • Bachelor's degree

For consideration at the GS-07 level:

Please have one or more of the following:

  • Completion of a professional nursing program AND 1 year of experience equivalent to at least the GS-5 level
  • 1 full year of graduate education or Bachelor's degree with superior academic achievement

For consideration at the GS-09 level:

Please have one or more of the following:

  • Master's Degree (or equivalent)
  • 2 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education with a concentration in a field of nursing (e.g., teaching, a clinical specialty, research, administration) or in a closely related non-nursing field
  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-7 grade level in Federal service

Note: Combinations of successfully-completed graduate level education and specialized experience may be used to meet the requirement of one year of specialized experience.

For consideration at the GS-10 level:

Please have one or more of the following:

  • 2 ½ years of progressively higher level graduate education with a concentration in a field of nursing (e.g., teaching, a clinical specialty, research, administration) or in a closely related non-nursing field
  • 1 year of experience equivalent to at least the GS-9 grade level in Federal service

Note: Combinations of successfully-completed graduate level education and specialized experience may be used to meet the requirement of one year of specialized experience.
