Garden Provides Free Food to Community

USP Leavenworth inmates gain experience volunteering

(BOP) – At USP Leavenworth's satellite camp, inmates are growing produce for low-income residents of Leavenworth County free of charge. Inmates participating in the Therapy and Mentor Horticulture Project learn skills in vermiculture (growing and producing worms), green housing, and farm-to-table produce production.

The produce grown by the inmates is donated to low income county residents and to area food banks. The program operates at no cost to the government, as a program coordinator in the community volunteers his time and solicits donations for all the necessary seeds and equipment.

Inmate Corbin Bosiljevac said, "I think it is important to give back to the community. All of the hard work is, in a way, penance for whatever we did to get here. It is for me, and I think that it is true for most of the guys who volunteer."
