FCI Miami Offers ESUBA Program

Inmates receive help in reversing the effects of abuse

ESUBA Program FCI Miami

(BOP) - "ESUBA" (abuse spelled backwards) is helping inmates at FCI Miami deal with issues related to abuse and violence. ESUBA, a program developed by Miami Dade College (MDC) for inmates in Florida's Correctional Facilities, offers alternative methods of dealing with conflicts. The two-phased, twenty-four week program focuses on topics such as identifying violent and controlling behaviors, sexual abuse, domestic violence, family violence, child abuse, and other patterns of abuse. FCI Miami brought the program to their institution to provide awareness for inmates in order to assist them in identifying dysfunctional patterns and potential risk in their own lives. Knowledge of "healthy relationship patterns" will challenge their concept of what "normal" is and provide the basis for a prosocial lifestyle upon release.

Reentry Committee Member Angie Acevedo stated, "Stories of domestic violence against men are normally hidden, complex and/or never disputed. ESUBA has given men the opportunity to learn how to address and process abuse on various spectrums, being the victim or the perpetrator."

Inmate participants take part in group sessions led by Miami Dade College faculty and students to help reverse the effects of abuse. The course assists inmates in overcoming anger problems, controlling their aggression, and dealing with verbal and physical abuse.

Inmate ESUBA participant Mark Lowe stated, "Prior to completing this program, I thought abuse mainly dealt with the physical altercations and verbal assaults, but I have learned that abuse can be defined in numerous ways. Stereotyping and judgments against others is a form of abuse I have both experienced and used against others. I know I will be a better person when I depart from prison having completed ESUBA."
