Former Butner Inmate Returns to Talk About UNICOR

Skills for Success

(BOP) - Jeremy Jenkins worked in Federal Prison Industries, also known as UNICOR, until his release from federal prison in 2012. Since that time, he has been working for the Industries of the Blind and using the skills he learned in UNICOR.

Mr. Jenkins recently returned to the Low Security Correctional Institution in Butner, North Carolina and spoke to UNICOR inmates. "Going through the programs in UNICOR that I was involved in, gave me the tools and the skills I needed to be able to come back into society and obtain employment which has had a major positive impact on my life." One of his most important messages to the inmates was for them to learn everything possible from the programs that are available during their incarceration. He said, "UNICOR helped me to gain the right attitude and work ethic needed to be able to succeed in my current job."

Mr. Jenkins was also able to use other skills he learned while at Butner, such as interviewing and resume writing, to secure his job with the Industries of the Blind. His success has contributed to the partnership between the Federal Correctional Complex (FCC) Butner and the Industries of the Blind to help other qualified UNICOR inmates find employment upon release.
