(BOP) - The Bureau of Prisons and the Social Security Administration (SSA) renegotiated an existing Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) allowing inmates to apply for a replacement Social Security Card while incarcerated. Most notably, the MOU increases the lead time from 120 days to 180 days for inmates to apply for a replacement card prior to their release, increasing the likelihood of releasing with a key document required for employment.
The renewed MOU is effective through January 28, 2023.
