Attorney General speaks with staff and inmates about First Step Act programming

(BOP) - Attorney General William P. Barr visited the Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) Edgefield, South Carolina, on Monday, July 8, 2019, to observe programming opportunities for inmates related to the First Step Act. The Attorney General visited the prison to see first-hand the important work being accomplished to promote successful reentry to the community. Senators Lindsey Graham and Tim Scott accompanied the Attorney General.

While touring the institution, Attorney General Barr spoke to staff and inmates about programming opportunities available at FCI Edgefield, including educational and vocational training programs, religious services and Federal Prison Industries. He also visited the Residential Drug Abuse Treatment Program (RDAP) offered at the adjacent minimum security satellite camp. The Attorney General remarked, "We were looking at those programs in effect now and learning about their success, some constraints on the programs, how we can expand them, how we can get better results from them."

Acting Director Hugh J. Hurwitz thanked the Attorney General for his support of the Bureau of Prisons and the work staff are doing with regard to the First Step Act: "We owe Attorney General Barr a great deal of thanks for supporting the work Bureau staff do to prepare incarcerated men and women for successful reentry into their communities."
