The Bureau is Hiring at USP Thomson!

(BOP) - The United States Penitentiary (USP) in Thomson, Illinois, is seeking individuals interested in working with the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP). This is an excellent opportunity to seek employment with the federal government and to have a meaningful career in public service with an agency that values a diverse workforce.

A Career Fair, with special emphasis on Correctional Officers*, was held on January 30 in Bettendorf, Iowa. Career seekers were able to meet with professionals and receive on-site application assistance. There are currently upwards of 100 job openings for Correctional Officers at the United States Penitentiary in Thomson, Illinois. The Career Fair resulted in great success. More than 30 applicants participated, to include several Veteran Appointments. Staff from the Human Resources Department, Recruiters, Executive staff and the Union from USP Thomson were in attendance and assisted in the application process. In addition, the Regional Director and Human Resources Administrator for the North Central Region, whom have direct oversight of USP Thomson, attended the event. Congresswoman Mariannette Miller-Meeks, 2nd congressional district of Iowa - southeast area, also showed her support for USP Thomson and the Bureau of Prisons by paying a visit to the Career Fair.

A second Career Fair is scheduled for Saturday, February 27 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., at the Graduate Hotel located at 210 South Dubuque Street in Iowa City. Interested applicants should create a USAJOBS profile and submit their application online prior to attending the Career Fair. To apply for a Correctional Officer* position, use Announcement Number BOP-N-2021-0001; other positions are also available. Human Resource staff, and other professionals from USP Thomson, will be on-site during the career fair to provide assistance with the application process, if needed. Applicants should bring their resume and two forms of identification with them to the Career Fair. Veterans should also bring a Member 4 copy of their DD-214 or VA rating decision letter and a VA Disability Certificate, if applicable. Applicants for medical positions should bring transcripts from an accredited school, their license and diploma.

Please note: Federal regulations require BOP employees to be under 37 years old when hired; however, exceptions are made for certain hard-to-fill positions and for preference eligible veterans. U.S. citizenship is also required. Candidates are subject to a drug urinalysis, physical examination and background investigation. Additionally, those hired must successfully complete the "Introduction to Correctional Techniques" training course.
